<image:title>Skills for Success - Innovation</image:title>
<image:caption>In a survey of more than 1500 CEOs across the world, the single most important skill for the 21st century was identified as creativity. Yet, even more important is putting that creativity to good use; this is innovation. Indeed, in a rapidly changing world, the most successful people will be those who can adapt quickly and innovate. Often people who go through our training sessions report their measurements of creativity increase by as much as 50 to 100 percent.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another vital skill is being able to communicate with others in a way that uplifts all people. <image:title>Skills for Success - Resilience</image:title>
<image:caption>All people will experience moments of adversity, challenge, trouble, loss, and even failure. There’s an expression that “what does not kill you, makes you stronger.” Unfortunately, that’s not true for most people. The vast majority gets weaker when they face the problems and difficulties of life. Fortunately, there’s a growing body of scientific research about how people can get stronger during the storms of life. We can train people in this skill, seeing measurable growth and development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Skills for Success - Time Optimization</image:title>
<image:caption>This is about doing what is most valuable: getting the greatest “return on time investment.” In a world where there are so many demands on our time, we need to make sure that we can identify and act on the key priorities. It’s about having the courage to say no to the countless distractions, temptations, and low-value activities that threaten to overwhelm us. Surprisingly, this is a skill that few people have learned. It is rarely taught in formal education. It’s no wonder that more than 90 percent of workers report being unhappy, overwhelmed, and disengaged. There are scientifically proven ways of engaging people to thrive and flourish at work, making them feel like they are making the best use of their time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Skills for Success - Changing Mindsets</image:title>
<image:caption>There are a number of mindsets that have been proven to increase success. For example, researchers at Stanford have studied mindsets that lead to greater growth. Other researchers at Yale, Princeton, and Stanford have studied how people reframe stressful experiences as exciting challenges to get better. The “action mindset” builds upon this scientific research on mindsets. This is about how people develop a sense of agency and control – believing that they can do something to make a situation better, rather than complaining about it or being passive. Surprisingly, there is even evidence for helping people develop mindsets that increase their ability to have good luck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Skills for Success - Prosocial Behaviors - Many of the most important business skills include integrity, ethics, character, generosity, and helping others. Yet the stereotype of effective businesses is that they are places where selfishness and greed dominate. Which is correct? Overwhelmingly, in recent years, the evidence proves that the companies and people who “do good” are the also ones that do well financially, and where people thrive professionally. These are behaviors that can be taught and put into place in any school or work environment; they make people healthier, happier, and more productive, with a greater sense of purpose and meaning.</image:title>

<image:title>Innovative Education - Education Philosophy</image:title>
<image:caption>Most traditional education is deadening. Teachers rely on lectures far too much, even though studies continually show that this is the least effective method of learning. Admittedly, there are some gifted teachers who are dynamic, charismatic, and passionate – teachers who have the students sitting on the edge of their seats, excited to learn. Nonetheless, we still discourage teachers from dominating the classroom. The best education will involve and engage the students in learning. The root of the word “education” comes from the Latin “educare,” which means to draw out. We are attempting to draw out of the students the best that they have to offer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I had the rare opportunity and privilege to go through the TAI program and it has been one of the most significant experiences that I will forever be grateful for. The skills I learned have been more than helpful for me in my personal and professional life. The TAI trainings instill a deep understanding of how to work for the common and greater good of the society without getting burned out or fatigued despite challenges and obstacles that might stand in the way. Going through the program TAI offers has been instrumental in helping me make decisions about my life and career and what I want to bring to the world and the legacy I want to leave behind. It has not only helped me to be a better person but has been paramount in the success of the organization I started, JumpStart Academy. We train young people in skills such as how to be resilent in the face of insurmountable issues that crop up daily, how to have a forward and optimistic outlook to life, and how to believe their each of their lives has meaning and they have what it takes to reach their goals, despite the difficult situations they may face given their life circumstances. I always recommend TAI to anyone I meet because the value of what they add to individual lives and professionals is far worth more than gold, diamonds, silver and rubies combined together.” Omotola Akinsola, Founder, JumpStart Academy (She currently is Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato)</image:caption>

<image:caption>"When asked about the best curriculum on social innovation that I've come across, I frequently refer professors to the TAI example. It is rare to see a course and body of teaching tools that is derived from such rigorous research and theoretical underpinnings that make professors impressed, combined with an engaging pedagogy that keep students learning and growing more than most other courses allow. TAI won an Ashoka U Cordes Innovation Award in 2010 to recognize impact, replicability and innovation. This is a well-deserved honor given the robust track record, level of impact and uniqueness of pedagogy that the TAI curriculum represents.” Marina Kim, Director, Ashoka U Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur</image:caption>

<image:title>Education & Training - Offering the “gold-standard curriculum” for training the next generation of change makers</image:title>
<image:caption>“The most effective social entrepreneurs I know didn't grow up wanting to be social entrepreneurs. They lived the problems they seek to address, or they grew intolerant of a status quo that conflicted with their values, and possessed the combination of agency, empathy, and practical skills required to do something about it. TAI invites students to go inward, to reflect on where they come from, and what they're passionate about, and to examine their strengths and talents, and how those strengths fit within the broader social change landscape. It offers practical skills training, grounded not in anecdote, but in actual science and research. “We know what great teaching and great coursework look like. The problem tends to be one of too much demand and too little supply, with the result that the best courses remain locked away to the privileged few who are able to enroll each semester. TAI has found a way to spread its principles far beyond the walls of a single institution, combining reach and accessibility with a gold-standard curriculum. It would be easy to dismiss ‘training the next generation of changemakers’ as lofty rhetoric. TAI has made it an achievable reality.” Lennon Flowers, Senior Change Manager, Ashoka Empathy Initiative (2011-13) Founder, the Dinner Party, an award-winning social enterprise</image:caption>

<image:title>Education & Training - Re-imagining teaching to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century</image:title>
<image:caption>“TAI offers teachers incredible ways to unleash student potential as innovators and changemakers. Their training exercises are backed by rigorous research. They are easy to adopt with the teaching guidelines for implementation. TAI is unique in getting faculty to get out of traditional academic bubbles and re-imagine teaching to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st Century. No participant will remain in the analytical margin. Every participant will emerge with a deep understanding of what students will experience. TAI programs are truly energetic and energizing. I have seen the power of their teaching proposals from the ‘Story of your Life’ assignment to dancing Michael Jackson’s Thriller in a class activity on leaders and followers. My students still talk about what they learned; they apply the lessons in their changemaking.” Patricia Márquez, Dean, Kroc School of Peace Studies University of San Diego</image:caption>

As an Echoing Green Fellowship organization, we knew TAI's strong reputation for turning scientific research into engaging and effective classroom content. “Though it has evolved with time, TAI's contributions remain the backbone of our Work on Purpose curriculum, which is now being used by approximately 800 faculty and staff at nearly 200 colleges, universities, nonprofits and, most recently, corporations.” Linda Kay Klein, Former Director, Work on Purpose, Echoing Green, Founder and President of the non-profit, Break Free Together</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Project GRAD helps low income, 1st generation high school students get into and succeed in college. We were inspired by TAI’s work highlighting the importance of skills like emotional intelligence, resilience, empathy, and grit. It easily won over our skeptical partner – public school administrators, counselors, and teachers. After consulting with TAI, we completely redesigned our approach to college access and college success. We now deliver curricula promoting social emotional learning skills and the growth mindset to help our students overcome the myriad barriers to academic success. Claremont Graduate University has been evaluating our progress the past four years in a quasi-experimental, longitudinal study and the results are extremely promising. There have been statistically significant improvements in student attitudes, academic behaviors, and grit. Project GRAD scholars graduate at a rate three times higher than their peers. Just as we hope our students transform their extended families and communities, we know that the power of TAI’s ideas can send ripples across the world.” Erik Osugi, Former VP and Chief Program Officer, Project GRAD Los Angeles</image:caption>

<image:title>Changing the World - Helping spark a clean energy revolution</image:title>
<image:caption>“The Transformative Action Institute defined the direction of my undergraduate experience at Princeton. Inspired by everything I learned, after college I went on to work with leading social entrepreneur Paul Polak on clean drinking water and bioenergy social ventures. Afterwards I worked on a win-win strategy for clean energy startup -- the same basic principles of transformative action. Now I’ve started a new social enterprise. I can't stress enough how much of a catalyst that first experience with TAI was for my life and career. Over the past eight years since I first took the Princeton course with TAI, I have met numerous high-impact change makers in the realms of social and environmental entrepreneurship. Among all these individuals, I would estimate that 80% of them have a connection to and were impacted meaningfully in some way by the Transformative Action Institute. TAI and its teachings are a hidden, deeply powerful force within the existing field of social impact - and I could not be more wholehearted in supporting the scaling of their work nationally and beyond.” Danny Growald, co-Founder, Aetheos Energy Co-Chair, BankFWD</image:caption>

<image:caption>Growing up in an army family, Emily Nuñez wanted to see if she could transform the power of the military into peaceful purposes. She has developed an award-winning social enterprise that is a “quadruple bottom-line” company: helping people, purpose, and planet, while also making profits. Her award-winning social enterprise is reducing waste, hiring veterans, and strengthening understanding between civilians and members of the military. “The Transformative Action Institute impacted my life in an awesomely positive way. As a result of the lessons I learned through the TAI, I was empowered to make a bold commitment to start Sword & Plough and incorporate social impact in every step of our business model. Scott and his team challenged me to think about innovation, and even luck, in news ways. This exciting process has helped me in my life as a social entrepreneur every single day. Because of the Transformative Action Institute, I am a more resilient, bold and innovative leader and entrepreneur. Imagine the positive social impact that would occur in the world if every student could learn the principles of transformative action!” Emily Nuñez, Sword & Plough, Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur</image:caption>

<image:title>Changing the World - The next generation of social entrepreneurs and world leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>"TAI is leading the way in training the next generation of social entrepreneurs and world leaders. For the past three years, the University of Pennsylvania has worked with TAI to train social entrepreneurs with the tools of transformative leadership. We now have trained over 130 social innovators. “I've witnessed how the TAI curriculum can be applicable for any early stage social entrepreneur. Regardless of the industry, venture stage, or interests of the entrepreneurs, the TAI curriculum helps people clarify their purpose, set a game plan in motion and build a growth mindset. Participants in our program walked away from the training with a greater willingness to dare greatly and take risks, to think more critically and creatively, to ask for help, and to spot new opportunities and alliances. TAI helps changemakers reach their full potential and create great social impact." Cosmo Fujiyama, Former Program Director, Center for Social Impact Strategy, University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Cosmo is the Vice President of Training at The Management Center.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2.1 million people die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases because of accessibility problems. As a senior at UC Berkeley, Nanxi helped develop a breakthrough technology that enables vaccines to be delivered to anywhere in the world without refrigeration. This became an award-winning social enterprise, Nanoly. She then went on to start another successful enterprise, Enplug, before the age of 23. “The successes of both Enplug and Nanoly can directly be attributed to the support, training, and mentorship I received from the Transformative Action Institute. If every entrepreneur could experience a Transformative Action Institute program, startups would have a much higher success rate. The work the Institute does is meaningful and necessary.” Nanxi Liu, Founder of Nanoly and Enplug, currently the CEO of Enplug</image:caption>

<image:title>Making Organizations More Effective - Transforming educational systems across Africa</image:title>
<image:caption>“Educate!” is a program that trains young people to become leaders and entrepreneurs across Africa, with practical lessons in problem-solving and social innovation. It has been adopted as part of the national curriculum for all high school students in Uganda, and is now being integrated into the national curricula in nine other nations across the continent from Kenya to Cameroon. I was a young educator struggling to build an impactful program in Uganda. There were only basic methods and junk science examples available to me until I came across TAI’s work. Transformative Action is how to turn good intentions into lasting behaviour change. It answers the hardest questions: how do people change and why do movements so often fail? The training and coaching by Transformative Action gave me the tools to revolutionize my approach. I am a better organization leader and teacher. Today, I reach over 25,000 African students a year. This is the power of Transformative Action--a global ripple effect of changemakers." Angelica Towne, Former Director of Educate! Director of Program Strategy, Educate! <image:title>Making Organizations More Effective - Addressing the most pressing social issues facing communities</image:title>
<image:caption>TAI is “an innovative thought leader in the social entrepreneurship and leadership space, and has provided expertise to support many university programs, fellowships, incubators, accelerators and training programs around the world.” Thus, Points of Light invited TAI to help create and design the Civic Accelerator. Over the last three years, we have supported and graduated 74 teams and over 150 entrepreneurs and invested $600,000 in peer-selected teams. Our portfolio of civic ventures have directly mobilized 397,000 people, with a broader reach of 4.2 million people, to address the most pressing social issues facing communities in the areas of education, environment, economic development and tech-for-good. We view TAI’s training, insights, and ongoing advice and support, as essential elements of our program and our success.” Ayesha Khanna, President, Points of Light Civic Incubator Founder, Civic Accelerator</image:caption>

<image:title>Making Organizations More Effective - Developing a “new science of change”</image:title>
<image:caption>Transformative action “may emerge as a new science of change that one day could become an academic discipline no less common than physics, engineering, or chemistry. The impact that TAI was able to leave on our team in just two short days of teeing up our Dream Academy training program has stuck with us to this day – and my mind is always racing to think about the next big project on which we can all work together. But what it races even faster for is when I'm thinking about the different world we will have on our hands when TAI’s work really takes off not only at The Future Project, but within the walls of every non-profit, high school, and university in the world. “Put simply, the Transformation Action Institute is a revolutionary approach to the topic of revolution, and The Future Project was, in the literal sense of the world, transformed, and so was I personally, to be exposed to it at such a formative moment. I'll be forever grateful for that and forever in anticipation of the emergence of the science of change that it can inspire.” Andrew Mangino, Co-Founder, The Future Project Ashoka Fellow, Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur</image:caption>
