Principle 1

Offer a Better Vision of the Future

To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

R. Buckminster Fuller

Instead of protesting how unsustainable our society is, we can offer a compelling vision of the future that we want. In other words, we shouldn’t spend most of our time and resources pointing out how dirty and polluted our waters are. Show a better alternative of clean waters!

Many people who want to create change focus on what they are against. They are excellent at pointing out what is wrong, which is certainly important.

Yet all too often this is ineffective. In fact, it can lead to a backlash. When you point out what’s wrong, you encounter others who will get upset. They will go into denial, resist you and resent you. They will hate you for pointing out their flaws.

A much better strategy is to offer an alternative vision: one that people will find to be attractive and alluring. Then let them make the choice for themselves.
